City receives more
input on its library

City officials and library planners met with residents at a second community meeting on Sept. 27 to discuss the future needs of the Campbell Library.

Residents reiterated similar requests from the first community meeting on Sept. 12, including their desire to see extended library hours and the addition of a cafe. Library patrons also told Kathy Page, a library consultant hired by the city to spearhead the needs assessment study, they would want to retain the library's natural light, would like more reading space and a change in the current layout. They told Page that they use the library as a research tool, for homework, to borrow audio and non-audio books, and for computer use, including access to the Internet.

"The architecture is great in the library, but it just doesn't fit who we are anymore," said Duc Pham, a Campbell resident and avid library user.

Other residents, such as Ed Pansello, suggested the city look to corporate sponsorship to help fund the possible project.

"I know there are companies locally such as eBay who might be happy to support the community," he said.

The surveys being handed out to users of the library will be collected on Oct. 6 and analyzed. The community can access the surveys at the city's website, www.cityofcampbell.com, the library's website, www.santa claracountylib.org/campbell, and on The Campbell Reporter website, www.community-newspapers. com/campbell.

Popular creek trail
will be widened

Campbell residents who complained of traffic problems on the Los Gatos Creek Trail at a Segway public hearing with the Campbell Parks and Recreation commission may find some relief.

The popular trail that runs through Campbell will be widened to accommodate its thousands of users per year.

"The Los Gatos Creek Trail is a heavily used trail, and we want to make sure that people are safe," said Bill Barnhart, capital projects manager with the county Parks and Recreation Department.

The Santa Clara Board of Supervisors awarded a construction contract to HRS Inc. for $497,6000 on Sept. 26. The widening project, beginning at Camden Avenue in Campbell south to Charter Oaks Drive in Los Gatos, is expected to be complete by spring. Detour signs will be posted along the trail where construction is occurring.

The trail will be widened by an additional 2 feet to 10 feet across with 2-foot-wide rock shoulders on each side.

The Campbell Parks and Recreation Commission approved the use of Segways on the Campbell portion of the trail on a trial basis on Sept. 6 despite the community's concern the trail was overused.

MetroEd's Hallet plans to retire

Metropolitan Education District Superintendent Tim Hallett will retire at the end of 2006. Assistant superintendent Paul Hay will be appointed interim superintendent beginning in 2007.

Hallett began work as MetroED's superintendent in 2003. The organization provides vocational training to 50,000 students across the county, including San Jose and Campbell.

The MetroED governing board voted
4-1 to appoint Hay, with the condition that his performance be evaluated in March. Hay has served MetroED since 2003 as a chief business official and then as an assistant superintendent of business and operations. Under his leadership, the district obtained a $1 million bond to renovate facilities in the Law Careers Academy.

Before MetroED, Hay was chief operating officer and general manager of the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. He also served four years on the Milpitas Planning Commission.
