Del Mar's Dean, Westmont pair qualify for CCS x-country finals

Jennifer Dean of Del Mar and Westmont's Morgan Chappell and Christi Ristow all qualified for the Central Coast Section cross country finals held Nov. 11 at Toro Park in Salinas.

Dean, a senior, covered the 3.0-mile course in 21:44 to finish 60th in the CCS Division 3 meet for girls, and Ristow, a sophomore, was 70th in 21:39 in the Division 2 girls event.

Chappell, a junior at Westmont, was 80th among Division 2 boys in 18:05.

Chappell had finished 50th in the Blossom Valley Athletic League back on Oct. 30 at Crystal Springs in Belmont. The junior finished the 2.95-mile race in 18:04 to lead Westmont to 16th in the team standings.

Sophomore Donald Tran was 74th in 18:32 with sophomore Gabbriel Pagan 78th in 18:39. Freshman Roman Clark ran 107th in 19:20 and senior Ftsum Yosef was 118th in 19:42.

The Westmont boys frosh-soph finished ninth as a team at the league meet with sophomore Justin Le leading the Warriors, finishing 30th in 19:50. Behind Le were sophomores Lucas Jones (32nd in 19:53) and Trent Ueunten (33rd in 19:56) and freshman Sam Breyfogel (61st in 21:24). Finishing the scoring was sophomore David Hou (64th in 21:29).

The girls varsity squad struggled for Westmont, finishing the race in 18th as a team. Ristow led the charge, finishing 56th in 22:22, with freshman Jessica Schwoob 86th in 23:46, sophomore Mary Panchenko 98th in 24:39, senior Anna Dihn 120th in 26:29 and sophomore Christine Dupic 129th in 29:25.

The Panthers of Prospect also took part in the race, with the boys varsity team finishing 20th as a team with a host of sophomores doing the scoring. Jared Tranberg came in 67th in 18:24, followed by Joel Palermo (91st in 18:52), Shawn Niknan (106th in 19:16), Alex Collins (112th in 19:29) and Steven Tucker (132nd in 20:07).

Prospect's boys frosh-soph team had a little more success, finishing all five point scorers in the top 100 to put the team in 14th. Freshman Matt Kreige led the Panthers, finishing 62nd in 21:21, with sophomores Aashbir Basi 74th in 21:54 and Nick Fota 76th in 21:56. Senior Chad West was 80th in 22:30 with sophomore Rehan Alam 88th in 23:47.

Dean was 39th in 21:37 to lead the Del Mar girls to a team 17th at the league meet. Raphy Floreani-Buzbee, Loral Uber, Erin Friesen and Brittany Sims rounded out the top five for the Dons.

Freshman Eric Pagendarm was 57th in 18:11 to lead the Del Mar boys to a team 21st. Scott Cooper, Lino Gutierrez, Oscar Bedolla, Matthew Bigham and Brian Conte also ran for the Dons.
