Westmont girls win Miguel tourney title

By Dick Sparrer

It would be tough to determine which pleased Westmont girls softball coach Jon Hennig more--a thrilling come-from-behind win over Leland last Thursday, or an equally thrilling late inning win over the Chargers on Saturday.

Needless to say, each of the victories had Hennig and his Warriors smiling.

The first win came Thursday when the Warriors rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to nail a 5-4 win over Leland in a key game in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The second win came just two days later when Westmont rallied for four runs in the last of the sixth on the road to a 6-2 victory over the Chargers in the finals of the Charlie Miguel Tournament.

Westmont beat Mountain View 13-6 and Pioneer 11-0 on a 2-hit shutout by freshman Christine Higgins to move into the Silver Division finals of the Miguel tourney at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex over the weekend.

Senior Kristina Boyer was the winning pitcher and Higgins came on to get the save in Westmont's 6-2 win over Leland. Sophomore Jenny Bybee was the big hitter in the win with a solo homer and a single.

The Warriors took the lead with single runs in the second and third innings, but Leland got one back in the fourth. Westmont took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth before exploding for four runs to clinch the win and the tourney title.

Westmont improved to 11-6 on the year with the victory.

Soph Courtney Fong blasted a grand slam and Bybee and junior Jacque Kuhny each homered in Westmont's 11-0 win over the Mustangs. Higgins was the winning pitcher, and Fong finished the day with two hits.

Senior hurler Cecily Castaneda picked up the win for the Warriors in their 13-6 victory over Mountain View. Kuhny singled and tripled to drive in three runs for Westmont, and junior Robyn Araujo and freshman Jessica Barrett each homered.

Things hadn't gone as well in Mt. Hamilton play during the week for the Warriors. They had lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Leigh, and they trailed Leland 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh on Thursday. But Barrett capped a four-run rally in the final inning, driving in the game-winning run for Westmont.

Higgins was the winning pitcher and Barrett had a double in the win that evened Westmont's league record at 2-2.

Freshman Kelly Retzer singled and doubled, but Westmont lost 2-1 to Leigh to open the week.

The Warriors return to league play this week. They were to host Live Oak on April 3, and they'll visit Evergreen on April 5, 3:30 p.m.

Del Mar and Prospect each split in Santa Teresa Division play last week. The Dons knocked off Sobrato 9-5 but lost 5-1 to Oak Grove, and the Panthers pounded Willow Glen 20-2 but lost 13-3 to Oak Grove.

Sophomore Leslie Wilson singled and homered to drive in three runs for the Dons in the win over Sobrato. Soph Aimee Myers was the winning pitcher.

The Dons scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth and took a 3-0 lead into the sixth before Sobrato unloaded for four runs to take the 4-3 lead. Del Mar answered right back, though, scoring six times in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the win.

Earlier in the week, sophomore Lauren Zweigle tripled home Del Mar's only run in a 5-1 loss to Oak Grove.

The Dons in Miguel tourney games last week, beating Los Gatos 4-2 but losing 10-0 to Alvarez. Del Mar, now 2-2 in the division and 5-8 for the year, was to visit Prospect on April 3 and will host Santa Teresa on April 5, 3:30 p.m.

Prospect is 1-2 in the division and 5-5 overall after last week's league split.

Leah Sparrowe flipped a 2-hitter to lead the Panthers to a five-inning win over Willow Glen last week. Sparrowe struck out eight in the game. Devin Cannon had two hits, scored two runs and knocked in a run.
