Obermeyer top senior, leads Warriors to title
By Kevin Sparrer
Of all the girls in the toughest volleyball division in the large Blossom Valley Athletic League, Kristin Obermeyer was the best senior of them all.
Westmont's Obermeyer was named the Mt. Hamilton Division Senior of the Year after leading the Warriors to a share of first place in the regular season. Westmont tied Leland for first place, with the clubs posting matching 12-2 records.
Along with Obermeyer, the Warriors also had junior Taylor Cohen and senior Tori Arlid, who were named to the all-league first team and who also played a large part in Westmont's success this year.
Seniors Jacque Kuhny and Cheryl Chapman received second-team all-league awards for their performances during the season.
Ultimately, the Warriors fell in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs to Mountain View, 3-2, but Westmont still finished with a winning record for the entire year at 19-15.
The rest of Westmont's championship team are seniors Kim Stroberg, Kristen Prigatano and Stephanie Coleman; juniors Itzel Duran, Chelsea Franza, Alison Miller, Miranda Sorchini and Julia Hoegel; freshmen Kelsey D'Amico and Chantel Talley.
The Warriors also have a bright future with its junior varsity also winning the championship in the Mt. Hamilton Division. Sammie Thompson and Summer Anderson were each named first team all-league for the Warriors, while Patsy Gregory was the only member of the Westmont team to receive second team all-league honors.
Jasper 2nd team
Prospect struggled a little this season in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.
The Panthers finished their league season with a 2-12 record and were 3-15 overall. Despite its tough year, Prospect did have a standout player in junior Jennifer Jasper, who was named second team all-league for her performance on the court.
The members of the Prospect team were seniors Devin Cannon, Angelina Canepa, Anita Koumriqian, Leah Williams, Marian Lu and Jaime Guetschow; juniors Chrissy Switzer, Courtney Gipson and Cary Gooding; and sophmores Priscilla Spradlin and Tari Parker.
Quilici leads Dons
While Westmont's girls had the top senior in their league, Del Mar had the top junior in its league in Ali Quilici.
Quilici was named the Junior of the Year in the West Valley Division of the BVAL, where Del Mar tied for the league championship with Oak Grove, both finishing with 13-1 records.
Del Mar had a pair of young athletes in sophomore Zoey Gamble and junior Sara Quilici, who were both named first team all-league for the Dons.
Senior Elli Batinich also left her mark on girls' volleyball with second team all-league honors.
Del Mar finished its season 21-6-1 overall after falling 3-0 to Notre Dame in the first round of the CCS playoffs.
The rest of the Dons on the championship team were seniors Sopheavy Bun and Dolores Hernandez, juniors Aimee Myers and Adriana Corpuz, sophomore Suzanne Bernd and freshman Sam Steeves.
