Schneider, Scott lead Warriors to win over Titans, into semi's

By Kevin Sparrer

In order to be the best, you have to beat the best, and the Westmont boys basketball team is well on its way to doing just that.

The Warriors have reached the semifinal round of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs after defeating Gunn 53-47 in the quarterfinals on Feb. 23 and Wilcox in the second round on Feb. 21 65-64.

Max Schneider led the Warriors in the quarterfinals, scoring 15, with a three and 12 points at the line. Brian Scott added 12 with a pair of threes and a pair of free throws. James Weimer added nine with a three and a pair at the line, Greg Talley had seven with a three, Patrick Barton had six with four free throws and Shan Aggarwal had four with two at the line.

The win advanced Westmont to the semifinal round where the Warriors were to face No. 1-seeded Archbishop Mitty on Feb. 26.

Prior to defeating Gunn, Westmont had a tough battle with Wilcox that ended with the Chargers throwing up a desperation shot with only one second left to play that could have meant the difference in the game.

Weimer led the attack against Wilcox with 16, including 12 points from beyond the arc, while Schneider added 14, including a pair of free throws and two threes. Talley had 12 with two at the line, Scott had 12 with three threes and a free throw, Jon Wahl had six and Bardon had five with a three.

Weimer and Schneider split duties, with Weimer leading the Warriors in the first half and Schneider in the second. Weimer scored 13 of his 16 in the first half with 11 in the first quarter alone. He hit three threes in the first quarter that helped the Warriors to their 23-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the half, Westmont's lead slipped to 32-29. Schneider was scoreless in the first half, but he came on strong in the second. Schneider scored five in the third quarter, but his big moment came toward the end of the game when Westmont was leading by only one with less than a minute to go. Schneider, who had been called multiple times for charging, drove hard to the hole for a lay-up and drew a blocking foul. He hit the shot for two points and then made the free throw for a three-point play and give Westmont enough of a lead to make it a two possession game for Wilcox. Schneider hit another free throw before the game ended to add nine in the fourth quarter.

"The ball rolled our way and we won," said Westmont head coach Bill Gerth. "Talley is coming along. We get the ball inside, and he turns around and puts it in the hole. Wahl also helped us out."

Prospect girls

The Prospect girls basketball team finished its season with a loss to Notre Dame-Belmont 82-49 on Feb. 23 in Division III of the CCS playoffs. Jennifer Jasper led the effort for the Panthers with 23 points, including a three. Simone Scott also put up 13 for Prospect with a free throw, while Katie Kinder had seven with a pair at the line and a three, Taylor Kikuchi also had six with a three and three at the line.

The Panthers (18-10) defeated Terra Nova 50-44 on Feb. 21.

This time it was Kinder who led the attack with 16, including three at the line and nine points from outside the arc. Jasper added 15 with three free throws, Kikuchi had eight with four from the line, Scott had four with a pair at the line, Mariah Rogers had three with one at the line, and Audrina Sablan and Kristina Kanemoto each had two.
