    Reflections of Her

    The Cupertino-Sunnyvale Senior Day Services and artist Paulette Peterson are collaborating to address the issue of older women and their life stories by documenting the histories of older women living in Santa Clara County. The multisite exhibit will consist of symbolic self-portraits, written histories and a series of monotype prints created by Peterson, and inspired by the life stories of the participating women. Opening receptions will be held Feb. 11, at various times and locations. Cupertino Senior Day Services will hold a reception from noon to 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 408.973.0905. The Sunnyvale Senior Center will hold a reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. For more information, call 408.730.7360. The artist and participating seniors will be present at the receptions to answer questions and discuss their lives and work.     Student Art Contest

    The Cupertino Federated Women's Club will hold its annual memorial Student Art Contest on March 3, in the Cupertino Library's community room. Voting will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants should notify the school office by Feb. 16, and club representatives will collect art between Feb. 26 and March 2. An award of $25 will be given to the overall winner of this contest. Awards of $15 and $10 will be given for the first and second place winners of the high school senior scholarship category. Winners at this local level will be taken to the Loma Prieta District of Women's Clubs student art contest on March 10. First place winners at the district level will go to the state student art contest sponsored by the California Federation of Women's Clubs.     Firebird Orchestra

    The Firebird Youth Orchestra will perform on Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Cupertino Library. The orchestra is made up of elementary through high school students who play music on traditional Chinese instruments. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 408.446.1677.

    Chinese New Year Stories

    Chinese story times will be held on Feb. 7 and 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cupertino Library. For more information, call 408.446.1677.

    Art in the Park

    Exhibit applications are now being accepted for the 23rd annual Art in the Park, co-sponsored by members of the Fine Arts League of Cupertino and the Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department. Art in the Park is scheduled for May 20, at Memorial Park. The exhibit will be open to original art, including oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, acrylics, fabric art and photography. Beginning with 25 artists, the original exhibition has grown to over 100 artists and an attendance of 2,500 and more. Member artists will exhibit for a fee of $25, nonmembers will be juried into the exhibition for $50. Exhibit applications may be obtained through Nancy Bennett at the Quinlan Community Center.     Senior Center Programs

    Cupertino residents have the opportunity to provide ideas for programs at the new Senior Center, scheduled to open March 3, in Memorial Park. A survey will be available at the temporary Senior Center office at the Quinlan Community Center, 10185 N. Stelling Road, and at the Cupertino Library. The new Senior Center is for the entire community and input from all is welcome. Surveys should be returned to the Cupertino Senior Center by Feb. 10. For more information, call 408.777.3150.

    Spay and Neuter Month

    The Humane Society of Santa Clara County offers spay and neuter surgery for half the regular price during the month of February, to promote saving the lives of homeless animals. Spaying and neutering helps prevent pet overpopulation, prevents certain types of reproductive cancers from developing, and helps prevent pets from wandering from home in search of a mate.     Massage Therapy

    Through March 22, at De Anza College, members of the campus community and the general public have the opportunity to enjoy a therapeutic massage on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for a nominal fee. Participants should schedule an appointment by calling 408.864.5645 and should arrive at least 20 minutes early to locate the massage clinic in PE Building 1, Room 12, and to fill out paperwork.

    The clinic provides advanced massage students with the chance to demonstrate their skill and to explain the health benefits of a massage. The cost for a massage is $5 for students, $10 for faculty and $15 for community members.     'Kids in Creeks'

    The Aquatic Outreach Institute is presenting a two-day educator's workshop, "Kids in Creeks," Feb. 10 and 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Coyote Hellyer County Park. The workshop is open to all K-12 educators who work in Cupertino, San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell and Monte Sereno. Participants will engage in hands-on activities to learn about aquatic insects, pollution prevention, animal tracking, storm drain stenciling, water quality monitoring and more. Stipends of $150 are available for participating in both days and completing a follow-up project. Pre-registration is required for $25.
