Registered sex offender arrested for indecent exposure in city library
By Kevin Fayle
During the afternoon of March 25, a registered sex offender allegedly walked into the Cupertino Public Library and exposed himself to a 13-year-old library patron sitting alone at a table. The young girl, extremely shaken by the encounter, left the library and flagged down Deputy Jacobs of the Sheriff's Department, who was on duty at city hall at the time.
According to the department's public information officer, Sergeant Keith Bayley, sheriff's deputies then entered the library and escorted the suspect, Morgan Maher, 45, outside, after the young girl identified him. Once outside, the suspect attempted to flee the officers' custody on foot. After a short pursuit, Deputy Steve Reiniger apprehended the suspect and placed him under arrest for indecent exposure with prior convictions.
Maher allegedly approached the victim in the library around 4:15 p.m. with his pants unzipped and his genitals exposed. "The victim was upset and crying," Bayley reports. No one else witnessed the crime.
Maher, a resident of Santa Cruz and a registered sex offender, has prior convictions in 1992 and 1995 for indecent exposure. He claimed, according to Bayley, to frequent a bookstore in the area, and said he went to the library because he enjoys reading.
After the foot pursuit, Maher offered no further resistance and did not receive a charge of resisting arrest, although Bayley said the district attorney handling the case may add the charge after reviewing the reports.
Deputies took Maher to the Santa Clara County Jail, where he was booked.
