General Plan is important
I appreciated the article on housing, jobs and Cupertino's future by Councilman Don Burnett in the June 27 issue of the Cupertino Courier. I agree that it is very important that the citizens get involved in this process now, as it will affect our future quality of life.
I would appreciate more articles on the pros and cons of issues being discussed at the General Plan meetings and how each would impact us as citizens of this community.
I particularly liked Mr. Burnett's idea of using "undeveloped industrial land" to build more housing rather than encroaching upon the homes of citizens who already live here. I would like to encourage the "redevelopment" of businesses already here (places like Vallco, the Oaks, Carrow's, Yoshida's and Santa Barbara Grill) rather than building more office and retail space.
I encourage all citizens of Cupertino to become involved in the General Plan process. Please attend the meeting on July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center to hear what this is all about and give your input. This is the future of your home values, your children's playgrounds and your neighborhood streets.

Canyon development will ruin quality of life
I have lived on Ricardo Road for 24 years. The Canyon Heights development plan puts schools right in my backyard, the elementary school 30 steps from my fence. While I had expected this property to be developed at some time, I reasonably expected the development to fit the character of the neighborhood.
I did not expect some high density, high traffic usage such as light manufacturing, a shopping center or a large school complex. These applications are wildly out of character with the existing neighborhood.
Please understand, it is not as if I recently bought a home near an airport and am now complaining about airplane noise. Effects of the Canyon Heights group proposal will significantly and negatively impact my quality of life, degrade the rural environment and reduce the value of my most significant investment, my home.
