Assembly grants more funding to CUSD and FUHSD

All 75 members of the California State Assembly approved a bill on July 23 to equalize funding among schools throughout the state. Assemblyman Joe Simitian's bill, AB 441, calls on the superintendent of public instruction to compute an equalization formula to guide the distribution this year of $40 million among schools that receive the lowest levels of support from the state. The bill also states the legislature's intent to bring all schools up to the funding level currently enjoyed by the 90th percentile by the 2006-2007 fiscal year.

The bill estimates that this task will require $400 million. The Cupertino Union School District stands to receive an extra $233,310 from the distribution, and the Fremont Union High School District will gain an additional $160,081.

    Firefighters to work fundraiser

Cupertino firefighters from local 1165 will take to the streets at De Anza Boulevard and Homestead Road on Aug. 2 and De Anza and Stevens Creek boulevards on Aug. 3 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. to help support the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "Jerry's Kids." The firefighters will participate in the "Fill the Boot" campaign at traffic signals, asking that motorists drop a contribution in an empty fireman's boot. The firefighters hope to raise $40,000 over the two days to benefit the local chapter of MDA. The campaign marks the first time the Cupertino Firefighters have volunteered to help MDA.
