    International Cinema at Sundown Series comes to Cupertino's Memorial park

    Moviegoers in Cupertino will soon have a new way to enjoy film when the city of Cupertino presents the first International Cinema at Sundown Series, which will begin Aug. 23. For three consecutive Thursdays, Memorial Park amphitheater will become a free outdoor, international evening theater.

    The series will feature live entertainment and the showing of one foreign film from 6:30 to 10 p.m. each night. All films will have English subtitles. Residents are encouraged to bring a picnic to the park.

    The first program on Aug. 23 will feature the Slavonian Traveling Band followed by a film in Farsi. On Aug. 30, Mariachi Nuevo San Jose will perform, and a Mandarin film will be shown. On Sept. 6, the Shri Krupa Dance Foundation from South India will perform prior to a Japanese film. Some language in the films may be inappropriate for young children.

    Rotary Club holds barbecue at Blackberry Farm

    The Rotary Club of Cupertino will be hosting its annual club barbecue on Aug. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Blackberry Farm. Cost for the event, which will include dinner and drinks, is $20 per person and $10 for children 12 and under. Appetizers will feature ethnic cuisine from around the world supplied by many Rotary Club members.

    Preparation is well under way, however, volunteers are needed to help with the food, set up, serving and clean up. Contact Bill Kerr at 408.255.1806 to help out.

    Child Safety Fair at Vallco

    The City of Cupertino, Santa Clara/San Mateo Safe Kids Coalition and other various organizations will be sponsoring the First Annual Child Safety Fair on Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vallco Fashion Park, 10123 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino.

    More than 25 local organizations will provide information concerning safety in the home, school, and the community. Those who bring their in-line skates, bicycles and car seats can receive free safety checks.

    For us to better serve you with the car seat inspection, please bring your car seat instructions, vehicle owner's manual and child or children. Walk-ins are welcome and will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. To make a reservation, please contact Sergeant Karen Burgess at 408.777.3173.

    Parent support group meets every Tuesday evening

    Tough Love, an all-volunteer support group for parents of at-risk children of all ages, meets every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church. Problems addressed include runaways, ADD [Attention Deficit Disorder], mental illness, AIDS and drugs.

    Cupertino High School All '60s Alumni Reunion set

    Cupertino High School Class of 1961 to 1969 will be celebrating an All 60s Alumni Reunion on Sept. 7, 8 and 9 at David's Restaurant in Santa Clara. The three-day event will include a golf tournament Sept. 7, which will cost $48 per person; a dinner/dance Sept. 8, which will cost $55 per person; and a picnic on Sept. 9, which will cost $10 per person.

    Cupertino Senior Center holds free performance

    Since its establishment in 1994, the Fantasia Performing Arts Center has provided instruction in Chinese traditional dances and the incorporation of Chinese opera movements into some of the dances to form a unique combination of dance and martial arts, under the direction of Carol Ma.

    The Fantasia Performing Arts Center will perform a free dance program Aug. 23 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the Cupertino Senior Center, 21251 Stevens Creek Blvd. Call 408.777.3150 for information.

    Career center teaches résumé writing skills

    The Career Action Center of Cupertino will be hosting two résumé writing workshops on Aug. 22 and Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the center, 10420 Bubb Road, suite 100.

    Participants will learn the essential elements of writing a successful résumé in order to properly market themselves. Cost for the workshop is $40 for members and $55 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. Call 408.343.2711 to register or for more information.

    California Youth Symphony

    The California Youth Symphony has openings for trombone, French horn and string bass players in its most advanced ensemble. Conductor Leo Eylar will hold auditions through September.
