    It's football season!

"Are you ready for some football?"

The cry brings with it the return of Monday Night Football to the television airwaves. But there's than just NFL action getting under way right about now ... the high school season is about to begin.

The teams that are part of the Fremont Unified High School District will take the field at De Anza Community College on Aug. 31, 2:30 p.m., for a football jamboree.

See Fremont, Homestead, Cupertino, Monta Vista and Lynbrook in action for the first time this season on Friday afternoon at De Anza.

    Dons to open

The De Anza Community College football team will open the 2001 season on the road when the Dons head to Aptos on
Aug. 30 to visit Cabrillo for a 6 p.m. game.

The Dons travel to San Jose City College on
Sept. 7, 7 p.m., before opening the home season on Sept. 15, 1 p.m., on the De Anza field in Cupertino.

    Firebird returns

The 17th annual Firebird Invitational returns to the Fremont High School campus in Sunnyvale on Sept. 13, 3:30 p.m.

The cross country event annually attracts many of the top high school teams in the area with runners competing in five divisions-- boys open, boys varsity, girls varsity, boys frosh-soph and girls junior varsity.

Coaches interested in entering their teams in the meet should call Fremont coach Pat Lawson at 408.522.2400.

A week earlier, Fremont will host the 18th annual Watermelon Run. The Sept. 6 run is open to all current Fremont students and staff members, as well as Fremont alumni. The starting gun sounds at 3:30 p.m. There will be free watermelon for all participants after the race.
