    Is the city listening?

It has been since March l999, when Cupertino residents voted on the library expansion. When the council invited the residents to air their opinions on where they would prefer the library to be built, three different sites were mentioned. Before approving the text of the measure, council members changed the language of the "estimated" $l9 million from the general fund to "an amount not to exceed $22 million." This would allow the city to use funding sources other than the general fund.

The preferences of the community on where to build the library were completely ignored. Many residents came to the Dec. 4, 2000, meeting to voice their opinion. The meeting lasted almost four and a half hours; but the city council went along with the library steering committee, which decided on the location between city hall and the existing library. Councilman Michael Chang was right to say, "We have to come at the library project not only from a library perspective, but also from a community perspective."

Mayor Sandra James argued, "It is my responsibility to save as much open space as I can." I think we better take a second look at what the city council and its developers are up to. Lack of green is in the future, when every nook and cranny will be filled with coffeehouses, restaurants, hotels, and new middle- and low-income housing.

Residents of Cupertino should get more involved. If we visit the city meetings, maybe then our voices and opinions will be heard.

    Fit only for cows

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to golf in a cow pasture? Well wonder no more--just hurry over to Blackberry Golf Course.

Tire ruts in the fairway, some at least l0 inches deep. Weeds as wide as l6 inches. Fairway grass may vary from barely cut to 5 inches. The only decent parts of this course today are the greens.

Having been a homeowner in Cupertino since l95l, I can easily remember how proud we used to be of this course. Of course that was before the city took it over and decided to overlook its being there. This is a disgrace to the city and the golfers.

I would suggest that all golfers check out all persons running for election before voting again.
