    Obituary

    Carol Nelson Ames

    Cupertino resident Carol Nelson Ames died Aug. 23 in Tualatin, Ore., of natural causes at age 92. Ames was born June 24, 1909, in Garden Valley, Calif.

    Ames was an active member of the Cupertino Union Church, serving as Sunday school teacher, deacon, clerk of the church board and Sunday school superintendent since becoming a member of the church in 1946.

    Ames taught in the Cupertino Union School District for 22 years, was a pioneer in establishing elementary school services and became one of the first remedial teachers in the district. She also served as vice president of the California Counseling and Guidance Association and as an officer in the Gamma Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

    After retiring in 1974, Ames became a dedicated community volunteer with CONTACT of Santa Clara County. She was a runner-up for the JCPenney Golden Rule Volunteer Rule Award in 1985. Ames volunteered at the Christa McCauliffe School well into her 80s, tutoring children in reading.

    Ames is survived by her three daughters, Charlotte Brockway of Claremont; Margaret Juris of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and Stephanie Powell of Sherwood, Ore.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four of her nine siblings.

    Memorial services will be held at Union Church of Cupertino Sept. 29. Donations may be made to CONTACT of Santa Clara County or the church.
