Volunteers came out in force for CCS barbecue

By Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel

FORMER Mayor Dan O'Keefe breezed into town two weeks ago. He visited with friends Marilyn and Sandy Howard and loaded up the family treasures he'd been storing for years. That translates into political treasures--he was on the Cupertino Union School District Board while also a sitting councilmember. He then served two years as our state senator. Now he's a 'beach bum' in San Clemente. . . . Oops!! Bob Cowan, our director of community development, turned 55, not 50! So he's really in the fast lane. It was parks and rec director Steve Dowling who hit the mid-century mark (50)! We weren't about to take five years off Cowan and give them to Dowling.

INNER Wheel (Rotarian spouses and significants) were guests of Fusako Seiga Hoyrup at her home where she did a beautiful ikebana flower-arranging demonstration. We can't wait for her display with her students at the Quinlan Community Center on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26. A must see! The demo was hosted by Letah Mealy, the Rotary district governor's wife. Some of the local yokels attending were Doreen Huston, Joanna George, Alla Shtein and Sue Steele. . . . Sally and Terry Brennan are "over the hill" (in Santa Cruz) after years of community service and raising their family in Cupertino. A celebration was held at Linda Vista Park (one of OUR community's best parks) to bid them farewell.

COMING all the way from Spokane was former Cupertinian Molly Dalpae; Marilyn Norling, Dr. Richard Popejoy, Joe Tembrock and Louise Nolette had a much shorter ride. Sally and Terry aren't that far that they can't come back and visit . . . . Cupertino Community Services' 13th annual auction and barbecue was held at another one of OUR great parks, Blackberry Farm. It has been said that the two social events of the year are the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation Gala and the CCS Barbecue. Must be, because attendance is great at both functions. About 500 of Cupertino's finest were devouring the grub from the gourmet cooks, volunteers from the Redwood City and Central Fire District fire departments. Many volunteer hours are spent on the fundraiser. A small list of those working that night includes Vivian Low, Vic Marques, Zorka Keenan, and Dale Satterfield. After the lively auction, folks were seen carrying "bags of stuff" out of the park--among those Ginny Yandow, Mary Ann Riley, Kathee Kraker, Cindy Henry, Steve Smith, Mike Bruner, Vera and Joe Brown and George and Christy Popovich (all the way from Sonora). Next year the second Saturday of September (a tradition) is the 14th event--mark your calendars now!

WHAT are we going to do without Steve Young and Jerry Rice? PUNT!! . . . . The butterflies are free! So says Greg Jow and his friend Nanette and Bob and Barb Koppel. They attended a beautiful wedding at the San Francisco Fairmont Gardens, where each of the guests was given a "pyramid" box, and after the bride and groom were introduced, they set the "monarchs" free. Do you suppose we could do that to the British "Monarch"(y)--set 'em free? . . . Rotary had a wonderful abalone feed at the new estate of Jane and Jim Asher. Formerly owned and built by Paul Masson, it is nestled up in the hills overlooking the valley. We understand a ghost has taken up residence there. (Bet he was there first!) Bob and Kathy Nellis, Dick and Paulette Henning, Dave and Bonnie Stearns, and Jim and Pat Jackson were also there enjoying the gourmet meal. It's wonderful that so many people with these lovely homes generously open them up to community fundraising events.

SCHOOL is open, kids are everywhere, so please be careful and slow down! . . . . . Did you know Carol McDowell is the new Doggy Day Care Center Queen? . . . . Why do we keep seeing all these water breaks on the west side of town? Four in less than two weeks! . . . . Horny is still missing. . . . Bob Botelho of the City of Cupertino just retired after many years of service--now he's going to become a cherry picker at his ranch near Brentwood. Good luck! . . . . Ann Frith sold her Cupertino home of nearly 30 years and is headed south to Salinas, where she'll retire and be near one of her four daughters. . . . We had to dig pretty deep to put Greg Jow and Bob Koppel in--again--so please let us hear from you. . . . Phone 725-0930 or 252-1288, fax 446-5402 or 252-5780, email Cupscoop@aol.com or catch The Courier's Web site. See you in two weeks!
