The Cupertino CourierNews BriefsOptimists hold free bike-safety program The De Anza Optimist Club of Cupertino will hold a free bike-safety program Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. in the parking lot behind Quinlan Community Center. The program, designed for first- through seventh-graders, is co-sponsored by the city Parks and Recreation Department. The program includes instruction on proper turning techniques, a braking test, an obstacle course, a "slowpoke" race, helmet adjustments and more. Helmets are required and will be on sale at the event. For more information, call the parks department at 777-3120. Calling all grads Cupertino High School is creating an alumni directory and needs the help of graduates to make it a success. Bernard C. Harris Publishing Company, which is compiling the directory, is asking for help in locating Cupertino High School alumni. To contribute names to the directory, call 800/733-8859. Pollution prevention Cupertino's Public Works Department is offering three booklets to residents to help them avoid unintentionally causing water pollution through the use of cleaners and garden pesticides. Call 777-3337 for a free copy of "Pests Bugging You?" (a brochure/poster that explains how to control our Top 10 pests with less toxic pesticides); "Grow-It!" (a 28-page leaflet about less toxic pest control in the garden); and "Clean It!" (a 28-page leaflet on less toxic cleaning products and techniques).
