Pioneers, Mustangs each win to get even
Cupertino, Homestead earn decisive victories
By DICK SPARRER
It was a week for evening season records for local football teams.
That turned out to be good news for both Cupertino and Homestead High Schools.
The Pioneers rolled to a 28-21 nonleague victory over Gunn, and Homestead hammered Harker Academy 40-14. Each team improved to 1-1 in the young season with the victories.
Pioneers win one
Cupertino scored a touchdown in each quarter on the road to its impressive 28-21 win over Gunn last Saturday.
Jim Solchenberger raced for over 200 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Pioneers to the victory. Jared Schablaske also blasted over for a TD and Robert McCoy pitched a touchdown pass to Matt Leavenworth.
Solchenberger gave the Pioneers the early lead with he shot over from the two for a first-quarter touchdown.
Gunn tied it 7-7 early in the second period, but Solchenberger gave the Pioneers a 14-7 halftime lead when he took off on a 48-yard touchdown run before intermission.
Cupertino went up 21-7 on Schablaske's touchdown run, but the Titans returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD to cut the lead to 21-14.
McCoy went to the air to hit Leavenworth with a 16-yard touchdown pass that turned out to be the backbreaker for the Titans.
Gunn scored one more time in the game, but it was too little, too late for the Titans.
Gabe Zeballos kicked the extra points after each of the four Cupertino touchdowns.
The Pioneers, who lost their opener to Palo Alto, will head to Los Gatos this week to take on Saratoga on Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m. The Falcons are also 1-1, opening with a win over Prospect before falling 35-28 to Mountain View last Saturday.
Mustangs win big
Homestead evened its season record at 1-1 with a rousing 40-14 win over Harker Academy last Friday night at Fremont's Diesner Field.
Will Faules broke a first-quarter run 70 yards for a touchdown, and the Mustangs were off and running in the nonleague game.
Faules ended up with three touchdowns and 150 yards rushing in the Homestead victory.
'Stangs' quarterback Brandon Dougherty hit 4 of 7 passes for 93 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to Garren Strong later in the first.
Faules made it 21-0 at the half when he scampered 44 yards for a second-period touchdown. David Johnson converted after each of the TDs.
Steve Nichols took off on a 47-yard scoring run in the third to stretch Homestead's lead to 27-0 before Harker finally got on the scoreboard.
But Faules quickly answered the Harker score with his third TD of the night, this one on a 15-yard run. Johnson's kick upped the lead to 34-6.
Harker opened the fourth with a touchdown and 2-point conversion, but the Mustangs put the finishing touches on their first victory of the season when Brad McGee went 56 yards for a TD.
Homestead will hit the road to visit De Anza Division powerhouse Wilcox for a 7:30 p.m. game on Sept. 20. The Chargers are 0-2 following a 21-14 loss to Valley Christian last Friday.
Soccer team wins San Diego Labor Day Classic
A 35-yard shot by Megan Killeen found the back of the net to break a scoreless tie and lead the Fusion soccer team to the team title in the 18th annual San Diego Fire Labor Day Classic in La Jolla.
Fusion, a girls under-14 class 1 (select) team from the De Anza Soccer League out of Cupertino, won five straight games to win the title in the tourney that's one of the largest in the state.
Fusion opened the tournament with three straight wins, beating Mission Viejo 2-0, a team from Arizona 4-0 and the Del Mar Sharks 1-0.
The three wins pushed the locals into the semifinals, and Fusion fought the Serreno Golden Eagles from Southern California to a scoreless tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. The game was decided on penalty kick, and Fusion came out on top 3-2 to advance to the finals.
Fusion met the Sharks in a rematch in the title game, and the clubs were again locked in a scoreless tie before Killeen's goal lifted the locals to the 1-0 victory, their second 1-0 win over Del Mar.
Fusion outscored its foes 8-0 in the five games of the tournament with goalkeeper Nicole Golobic blanking the opposition.
Joining Killeen and Golobic on the championship squad were Catherine Kelly, Sarah Nakamoto, Jamie Wider, Brittany Vellios, Claire Gill, Kelly Maxwell, Nora Soza, Caroline Smith, Kathryn Wagner, Robin Chang, Katie Anderson, Carrie Macintosh, Lizzy Innes and Erin Maulhardt.
Players on the squad reside in Palo Alto, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Santa Clara, Campbell and Willow Glen.
