David Stearns and Oktoberfest chairwoman Kathy Nellis get ready for Rotary's party of the year.
Roll out the BarrelRotary fair benefits local good causesBy Mike de Give If your lederhosen are at the cleaners, now's the perfect time to get them back. Cupertino Rotary will throw its biggest party of the year Oct. 4 and 5, and all the oompahs are free. It's Oktoberfest time again. This year's event, which organizers hope will draw 30,000 people, will be held at Memorial Park for the first time. "The park is such a nice place. It's the center of our community, and it seems like an ideal location," said Kathy Nellis, who is organizing the event. The German cultural and entertainment fair features German beers and food, more than 80 artists and craftsmen, oompah bands and a Kinderplatz area for kids. The children's area includes a petting zoo, dunk tank, Circus Minimus, hands-on crafts projects and a performance by young "Chicken Dancers" from schools throughout Cupertino. The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. All money raised at Oktoberfest will be funneled back into the community. Last year, Cupertino Rotary donated more than $70,000 to local good causes. The club will also raffle off trips to Munich and Hawaii as well as 50 other prizes. Tickets are $2 each, or six for $10. To buy tickets call Roz at 255-7500, or ask a Rotarian.
