Tee up with CEEF--duffers are welcome

By Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel

HOW do we expect the editor to encourage "clean campaigning" in Cupertino if the cartoonist continues blasting candidates? De Cinzo is becoming part of the problem--not the solution. Last week's "hit piece" was by far the worst bit of journalism imaginable. We'll do our part for clean campaigns. Vote early and often! . . . Ron's Wildlife Run had a great Cupertino turnout at Vasona Park. Cheryl Brown chaired the Kiddie Trot, and each year there are more participants. Kirk and Craig Akimoto, David Lillo and Jessie and Jason Hogin were some of those present. Jesse, a winner in her category, brought her mom, Judy, along to run with Nancy Lamprecht, Mary Jo Gunderson, Lee McCrumb and Joan Cummings in the big people's run. Jack Hubby has chaired this wonderful event for many years. The funds go to promote educational science projects for youth throughout Santa Clara County. Next time you're at Vasona Park--check out the YSI (Youth Science Institute) display. Among the volunteers at the event were Mas and Eleanore Watanabe, O. E. Fullerton and Linda Roberts. It is really nice to see leaders in our community volunteer. This is what makes Cupertino special

SANTA Clara Valley YMCA Heritage Club had their annual dinner at the home of Beth Chinchin in the Rose Garden area. Northwest Y attendees were our fearless leader of the pack, Liz Gallegos, and her followers--Buck Cox, Morris Hosada and Ed Nieman. A good time was had by all. . . . The passing of Flint Center's First Lady, Vicki O'Brien, leaves a void in our community. She had suffered for the past three years with ALS. Her devoted husband, Tim, made sure she had her dream trip to Israel, Jerusalem and Switzerland--where she peacefully passed away. We already miss her. . . . On Sept. 24 from our Sister City, Toyokowa, Japan, 15 students are arriving at City Hall at 3 p.m. There will be a barbecue for them on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Senior Center. Let's give them a big Cupertino welcome. . . . Vallco Fashion Park took part in the special 40th birthday celebration of The Cat in the Hat, the lovable Dr. Suess character. The Cat has been a children's favorite in his red-and-white striped hat for 40 years. In honor of the celebration Vallco gave away a different Cat in the Hat book each week, through September 20, when customers brought $100 worth of receipts to the Information Booth from any Vallco merchant. The celebration ended Sept. 20 with a special birthday party for The Cat, where kids joined in the fun, including birthday cake, face painting and animal balloons! The Cat himself made special appearances at Vallco's Food Court to visit with the kids and read different books. . . . Speaking of Vallco, Isabella de Give will definitely be a ballerina. She walks on her tippy toes and is as graceful as a deer. Dad took her to the fashion park last week for her very first pair of shoes.

CAMPAIGN season has started. Fundraising events are being held. Get involved and support your favorite candidate. . . . The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation will host its 11th annual golf tournament. All proceeds benefit the Cupertino Union School District math program. You don't have to be a real (good) golfer to play; we take duffers, too--ask someone who has played in the past. For $150 you get golf, cart, lunch and dinner. What a deal! For more information contact the CEEF office at 446-CEEF. . . . We notice you're still reading our column. Seen running into the Quinlan Center for the latest issue was Gail La Mar--was it worth it? Jere Kinnan reads us first and one of the Lohmillers lines his trash can with our column. We aim to please everyone! . . . Mark Oct. 4 and 5 on your calendar for the Oktoberfest at Memorial Park. This is a change of venue, so be there or be square. (That dates us.) Times are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. . . . We want to hear from you!! Phone 725-0930 or 252-1288, fax 446-5402 or 252-5780, email Cupscoop@aol.com or catch The Courier's Web site, http://www.svcn.com/archives/cupertino.courier/. See you in two weeks!
