Tough week for Matadors

By Dick Sparrer

It was a tough week for the Monta Vista football team.

The Matadors suffered their first loss of the season, but more importantly, they suffered a key loss in personnel when returning all-leaguer Alex Munro went down with a knee injury.

Munro, a talented defensive end and running back who earned all-Central Coast Section honors after being named to the all-league squad in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, will miss his entire senior season.

Without Munro, the Matadors dropped a tough 14-7 decision to Willow Glen.

Monta Vista broke a scoreless tie in the second period when junior Brandon Douglas picked off a pass and raced 20 yards to a touchdown. Dan Wittmers kicked the extra point, and the Mats were up 7-0.

But the Rams scored before intermission to trail just 7-6 at the break. Then Willow Glen returned a punt for a touchdown in the third and held on for the 14-7 win.

Monta Vista will try to get back on the winning track Saturday, hosting Gunderson in a 7:30 p.m. game at Cupertino. The Grizzlies are 1-1 this season, beating Pioneer 34-7 in the first week before losing 48-44 to Woodside last weekend.

The Lynbrook football team lost for the second straight week, falling 36-9 in a nonleague game against Prospect.

The Vikings will be gunning for their first win of the year Saturday when they visit Fremont at 7:30 p.m.

Loss for Pioneers

Cupertino also slipped to 0-2 this fall after suffering a 28-6 loss to Lincoln on Saturday. The Pioneers will host Andrew Hill on Sept. 26, 7:30 p.m., as they look for their first win of the year.

Mustangs win

Homestead evened its record at 1-1 by beating Seaside 15-14 last week.

The Mustangs will return to Fremont's Diesner Field on Sept. 26 to host Washington in the final non-league game. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. following a 5:15 p.m. frosh-soph game.
