Auch serves up Cupertino wins

By Dick Sparrer

"Hello, my name is Kathryn, and I'm going to be your server tonight."

Now that may be a welcome introduction for someone sitting down to dinner at TGI Friday's. But for teams taking on the Cupertino girls' volleyball team this fall, it's bad news indeed.

Because Kathryn Auch is quite a server for the Pioneers, and she was good enough last week to help Cupertino to three wins in nonleague play.

Auch was 43 for 44 from the serving line in Cupertino wins over Liberty Baptist, Woodside and Lincoln to help the Pioneers push their season record to an impressive 7-3.

"She continues her good serving," said Cupertino coach Marty Redman of the 5-foot-4 junior. "She's serving over 95 percent this season."

Auch hit on 19 of 19 serves in the 15-4, 15-5, 15-8 win over Liberty Baptist to open the week.

She came back a day later to nail 14 of 15 serves for 10 points in a 15-3, 15-7, 15-7 win over Woodside.

Junior standout Erica Boss was also impressive in the win over the Wildcats. She hit on 16 of 18 serves for 15 points, including 12 aces.

"She's a real factor," said Redman of Boss, who buried nine of her aces in one game.

Auch finished the week with a 10-for-10 serving effort in a 15-9, 15-5, 15-10 win over Lincoln. Pomai Neil supported with five aces.

Boss led the Pioneers with 11 kills in the win, and Melanie Rekeita added seven kills.

The coach also singled out Danica Gardner and 6-foot-2 1/2 freshman Margaret Donoghue for playing well against the Lions.

The Pioneers will open play in the tough De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League when they host Fremont on Sept. 23, 7 p.m. Cupertino visits Milpitas on Sept. 25, 7 p.m.
