Cheers for Monta Vista choir's new moniker

As a 1997 graduate of Monta Vista High School, I experienced much of the turmoil that happened in the choral department during the past year. There still seems to be a lot of hostility radiating from the issue of this new choir.

I, for one, am very happy to hear that there is a new audition choral group in the tradition of the Madrigals and Variations. Some of my favorite high school memories are from Monta Vista choir.

I am also pleased to know that the group will create a new name and image to complement the new director, Ms. Paul. It would be very uncomfortable to replace the Jack Lindsay in Jack Lindsay's Madrigals. I imagine it would feel like a complete stranger was wearing your underwear.

Hopefully, this new group will add to the collection of traditions. I wish them the best. But please, continue to create your own traditions, and don't mess with my "Drummer Boy."

Privatize the USPS for better mail service

I just read a letter in this column about the Cupertino branch of the U.S. Postal Service and their lack of service. The writer wants the mail delivered before 4 p.m. and would like an alternative mail system. How about this?

Make the U.S. Postal Service totally private instead of a monopoly. Let it work on the profit motive. You would get delivery several times per day at a lot less cost. The business would shake out into three or four private companies. If you didn't like the service from one mail company, you could go to another service. You would have your choice, as you do with your newspaper or grocery store. In short, capitalism would be expanded, which gives the best service, the best products and the most employment.

Will it ever happen? Nyet! Too many liberals at the public postal money trough. But I can dream, can't I?
