The Cupertino CourierTough day for football teamsIt was a dismal day for the local high school football teams when they opened Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play last Friday. Cupertino and Lynbrook both lost in their El Camino Division openers, and Monta Vista and Homestead each lost in De Anza Division play. But all four local clubs will do their best to put the losses behind them and get back on the winning track when they take the field this week. The Matadors (1-3) hope to rebound from a 46-12 loss to Los Gatos when they host powerful Wilcox on Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m. The Chargers come in with a 4-0 record and opened league play with a 41-6 win over Homestead last week. The Mustangs (1-3), meanwhile, will travel to Foothill on Friday to face Mountain View at 7:30 p.m. in a non-league game. The Spartans are coming off a 47-17 win over Lynbrook last week. The Vikings (0-4) visit Santa Clara at Townsend Field on Friday, 7:30 p.m. Cupertino (0-4) lost 38-6 to Milpitas in its league opener last week, but will try to turn things around this week against Los Altos on Oct. 10, 3 p.m.
