De Anza gala aids learning center

Campus celebrates its 30th anniversary

De Anza College will officially open its expanded learning center Nov. 1 at its fourth annual "Night of Magic" gala.

In addition to raising money for the A. Robert DeHart Learning Center, the gala will celebrate the college's 30th anniversary, honor a number of friends and alumni of De Anza and feature entertainment and activities in a community event.

Lew Platt--chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Company--will be the guest of honor. For the past three decades, Platt has held a variety of management posts at H-P.

In 1995, Platt was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy Negotiations by President Clinton and is serving as chairman of the World Trade Organization task force. In 1996 he was elected co-chair of the board of directors of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, an organization formed in 1991 to strengthen the local economy and make the area a better place to live.

The gala begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception in the A. Robert DeHart Learning Center, where there will be an official ribbon-cutting for the center's expanded and renovated library. Later that evening, a live auction will be held. Some of the auction items include computer equipment and software, weekend getaways, dinners at local restaurants and tickets to entertainment and sporting events. Additional evening festivities will include an elegant dinner, live music, a silent auction and a drawing.

"A Night of Magic" tickets are available for $75 each, and corporate sponsorships begin at $3,500. For further information or tickets, call Robin Lyssenko of the development office at 864-8500.
