The Cupertino CourierGelblum leads Mats to win over HomesteadBy Dick Sparrer Four matches could have gone either way, and the Monta Vista girls' tennis team was mighty glad that three of them went the Matadors' way when they battled Homestead in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week. Monta Vista nailed a 6-1 win over Homestead, but two of the matches went three sets and two others had sets decided on tiebreakers before Monta Vista players pulled out victories.. Liore Gelblum started the Matadors on the road to victory with a lopsided 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Liz Yu backed up that win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles. But after that, things tightened up in singles action. Cari Nicholson and Sunny Park battled through tough first sets at No. 3 singles before Nicholson clinched a 7-6 (7-4) win in a tiebreaker for the Matadors. Nicholson went on to take the second set 6-2. Aileen Chen and Jenny Park fought it out through three sets at No. 4 singles before Monta Vista's Chen secured a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win. MV's Amy Giver and Kelly Kang came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, but the action was more intense in the final two doubles battles. Patty Chung and Stacey Kim won a thriller for Homestead at No. 2 doubles, taking Katherine Fustar and Calvina Cheng in three sets. The Homestead pair lost the first set 6-3, but tied the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. They clinched the win for the Mustangs with an exciting 7-6 (10-8) victory in the third and deciding set. The Matadors came back with a win at No. 3 doubles, but not before going to a tiebreaker in the second set. Cynthia Fung and Sarah Clewitt of Monta Vista teamed for a tough 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) win over Mia Chiu and Diana Yeh. The Mats lost a 6-1 nod to Saratoga later in the week despite a 6-3, 6-2 win by Gelblum at No. 1 singles. The Matadors are 4-4 in division play and 5-5 for the year. In other De Anza Division action, Lynbrook lost 7-0 to St. Francis and 6-1 to Gunn to slip to 4-2 in league play. Belinda Rungsea posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles for Lynbrook's only victory in the loss to the Titans. In the El Camino Division, Cupertino pulled out a 5-2 win over Santa Clara behind Nicole Srivastava's 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, and Fremont dropped a 7-0 decision to Palo Alto. Girls' field hockey Beth Loveless came through with two goals and an assist to lead the Cupertino girls' field hockey team to a rousing 4-0 win over Fremont in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week. Erin Morales and Paul Bergantz also scored goals for Cupertino and Melissa Low chipped in with an assist. The Pioneers, who battled Del Mar to a scoreless tie earlier in the week, are 1-0-1 in division play. Tricia Ignaitis scored a second-half goal, but the Homestead girls' field hockey team lost a 3-1 to Live Oak in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL last week. The Mustangs and Acorns had played to a scoreless tie through the first half, but Live Oak outscored Homestead 3-1 in the second half. Homestead dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Willow Glen later in the week to slip to 3-4-1 for the year and to 0-2 in division play. Monta Vista split in Santa Teresa play last week, beating Saratoga 2-0 before losing to Live Oak 5-2. Lynbrook is off to a 2-0 start in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. The Vikings blanked Los Altos 3-0 and Leigh 4-0. Water polo Suzannah Johnson tossed in two goals and Nichole Morasky, Jasmyn Cox and Tine Van Criekinge added one each to lead the Lynbrook girls' water polo team to a 5-3 win over Menlo-Atherton in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL. The Vikings improved to 2-0 in the division and to 9-4 for the year with the victory. M-A actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Lynbrook tied it 2-2 by intermission. The squads played through a scoreless third period before the Vikings outscored the visitors 3-1 in the fourth to clinch the two-goal win. In another division game, Monta Vista dropped a 9-2 decision to St. Francis. Cupertino lost 15-3 to Saratoga in an El Camino Division game. Liz Shelley scored two goals for the Pioneers. In boys' water polo action, Hrsto Avgarski and Dave Daines pitched in four goals apiece to lead Homestead to a tight 12-11 win over Santa Clara in the El Camino Division. Artur Studzinski supported with three goals for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-6 for the year. Cupertino improved to 3-0 in the De Anza Division with a 13-10 win over Saratoga. Lynbrook lost a tough 13-9 De Anza decision to Gunn. Clifton Awuy scored four goals for the Vikings in the game and Ylan Iocobovici added two goals. Ross Morrill, Frank Liao and Scott Anderson also added goals for the Vikes.
