The Cupertino CourierNews BriefsKeep your pets safe on Halloween Attention, all pet owners: Keep your pets safe and happy on Halloween night--keep them inside. The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley warns that Halloween can be a dangerous night for animals, especially black and white cats. Mythology that black cats symbolize evil and white cats symbolize purity makes them targets for sacrificial rituals. Friendly cats are particularly vulnerable because anyone can pick them up. Halloween revelers often open gates and let pets out while owners are answering doors. Intentionally maiming, wounding or killing animals is a crime punishable by a possible jail term and up to $20,000 in fines. In addition to keeping pets inside, keep them away from the Halloween hoopla, including candy. Chocolate contains theobromine, a stimulant that makes dogs violently ill and can kill them if they consume too much. If you'd like to treat your pet, the Humane Society recommends catnip sock toys or a sock wrapped around an old tennis ball--treats with no tricks attached. Symphonic Band offers concert The Cupertino Symphonic Band will present its third annual Veterans Day Concert Sunday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Cupertino High School auditorium.
