Pioneers place

Nuru Abdella finished third in the boys' race, and Celeste Dunlop was fifth in the girls' division to lead the Cupertino effort at the Cal Poly Invitational last weekend.

Abdella covered the 3.1-mile distance in 16:56 to finish third overall in the 70-runner field and lead the Pioneers to a fifth-place finish in the 11-team Division III field.

Dunlap was fifth in 20:36 in the 66-runner girls' race. The Pioneers finished seventh as a team in the 10-team field.

Grondzik stars

Kara Grondzik popped home five goals in two games to lead the De Anza Community College women's soccer team to back-to-back Coast Conference wins over Gavilan and Foothill.

Grondzik hammered two goals and added an assist in a 7-0 win over Gavilan to open the week.

She came back with three goals, two of them off assists from Kelly McMicken and Dawnell Larsen (Fremont), in De Anza's 3-1 win over Foothill.

The Dons are now 9-0-1 in conference play and 11-0-1 for the year.

Lacrosse Club meeting

The Tomahawks Lacrosse Club will hold a registration and informational meeting on Oct. 21, 7:15 p.m., in room C3 at Jordan Middle School, 750 North California, Palo Alto.

The club is open to all students in grades 4-12 living on the peninsula. Players of all ages are needed, and no experience is necessary.

Practice begins in January with games played from March-May. For more information, call 1-650-962-1455.
