    Keep cats inside during Halloween

The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley has issued a warning to owners of black and white cats as Halloween approaches. The Humane Society states the cats could become targets of abuse or sacrificial rituals because of mythological beliefs that black cats symbolize evil and white cats symbolize purity. Christine Benninger, executive director of the Humane Society, said people who abuse animals often cruise neighborhoods looking for black cats just before Halloween, and she strongly recommended keeping all pets confined inside, especially on Halloween night.

    Parks and recreation cancels 'Ghostwalk'

The parks and recreation department's annual Halloween "Ghostwalk" has been cancelled because of a lack of community interest. The Ghostwalk at Blackberry Farms picnic grounds was originally scheduled for Oct. 26 and 27, and tickets needed to be purchased ahead of time. Organizers of the event apologized for any disappointment caused by their decision, and said anyone who has already purchased tickets would receive a full refund.

    CUSD union endorses election candidates

The teachers of Cupertino Union School District, through their union, the Cupertino Education Association, voted to endorse school board candidates Pearl Cheng, George Tyson and Gary McCue. All three candidates have children in Cupertino schools, and the teachers say they felt confident that they have the knowledge and will provide a positive impact on the board, according

to Janice Hagerbaumer, president of CEA.

Stevens Canyon hosts 'Meet the Candidates' night Oct 30.

The Stevens Canyon Residents Association is hosting a "Meet the Candidates Night" on Oct. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at 22336 Rancho Deep Cliff Drive featuring the four candidates that were endorsed by the association. The event is open to all Cupertino residents and will offer an opportunity to meet and ask questions of Mayor Sandra James, Patrick Kwok, Geoff Patnoe and Dolly Sandoval.

Cupertino Chamber endorses two of the council candidates

The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce announced on Oct. 17 its endorsement of Mayor Sandra James and Orrin Mahoney, a longtime resident who has served on the Planning Commission and currently serves on the city's economic development committee.

According to the Chamber, the main criterion for endorsement was the involvement of the candidates between city government and the business community. The Chamber noted several of the candidates as "business friendly," but only James and Mahoney received the two-thirds majority vote required for endorsement.

    Change alarm batteries

Local County Sheriffs and the International Association of Fire Chiefs remind Cupertino residents to change their smoke alarm batteries on October 28, the same day that they change their clocks to standard time as part of the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries" campaign.

Changing smoke alarm batteries at least once a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce tragic deaths and injuries. Working smoke alarms nearly cut in half the risk of dying in a home fire. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends replacing your smoke alarm every 10 years.

County Sheriff also wants to remind residents to test smoke alarms by pushing the test button, plan two ways out of the house in event of a fire, and practice those escape routes with the entire family. Families should also prepare a fire safety kit that includes working flashlights.
