Pioneers top of local hockey standings

Dean Honma certainly expected his girls field hockey team at Cupertino High to figure among the title contenders in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this season.

In fact, Honma was even more confident than that--he was picking his Pioneers to win it all.

Cupertino won twice in league play last week to improve to 6-0 in the division and to 9-2 for the year.

The Pioneers opened the week with a tight 1-0 win over rival Homestead (3-2). A second-half goal by senior forward Katie French off an assist from senior superstar Alisha Harada gave Cupertino the win.

French knocked in two goals to lead the Pioneers to a 4-1 win over San Jose Academy later in the week. Harada, last year's league most valuable player, added a goal and an assist, and Jessie Frink, a returning all-leaguer, also scored a goal. Meghan Fitzgerald and Becky Fryer added assists.
