Vikes close in on perfectionBy Dick Sparrer Lynbrook is closing in on perfection. That is, the Lynbrook girls' volleyball team is closing in on a perfect record in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Vikings are just two wins away from a 12-0 league season--and all that's standing in their way are Santa Clara and Cupertino. Lynbrook hosts the Bruins on Oct. 28, 7 p.m., before visiting Cupertino in the final game of the league season on Oct. 30, 7 p.m. The Vikes pushed their perfect record to 10-0 last week with wins over Wilcox and Milpitas. Lynbrook, 20-2 for the year, beat the Chargers in three games, 15-2, 15-6, 15-13, and took the Trojans in four, 8-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-12. Cupertino opened play last week dropping a tough 15-11, 15-9, 10-15, 13-15, 15-8 nod to Saratoga, but the Pioneers battled back to beat Santa Clara 15-10, 12-15, 15-11, 15-6. "Santa Clara served us real tough," said Cupertino coach Marty Redman. "I think they had 16 aces in the first two games." "But then we handled their serve better, and we were a lot better than they were on the court," he added. Kathryn Auch and Erica Boss finished the night with 14 service points apiece. Boss added 21 digs and 13 kills. Freshman Margaret Donoghue chipped in with 10 kills and four blocks, Denise Stewart added 11 kills, and Sharon Han supported with nine digs. Melanie Rekieta is currently on a 47 for 47 serving streak for the Pioneers. Cupertino is now 5-5 in the El Camino Division and 15-10 for the year. In De Anza Division play last week, Monta Vista dropped a tough decision to unbeaten St. Francis. The Matadors lost the first game 15-2, but battled the Lancers tough in the second game before falling 15-12. Monta Vista lost the match, though, falling 15-6 in the third game. Monta Vista slipped to 4-4 in the division with the loss. St. Francis leads the pack at 8-0. The two losses dropped the Mustangs to 2-7 in the division and to 10-12 for the year.
