The Cupertino CourierFormer supe and spouse smiling from ear to earBy Linda Walker and Barbara Koppel So did you miss us these past four weeks? We've got some catchin' up to do. . . . Leadership Cupertino was off to a great start! Twenty-five community leaders joined the city department heads for a half-day of learning about Cupertino and the roles of staff and council. Some of the newer members are Marie Akin-Griffith, Greg Casteel, Jennifer Chang, Kathleen Crawford and Michelle Hu. Next week they tour Kaiser Cement and its 4,000 acres. Thank you, Paddy Bishop. . . . Michael Cole, a Monta Vista graduate (class of 1986), and Kristen Tupper exchanged vows at Aptos Seascape overlooking the ocean. Parents are longtime Cupertinians Jan and Earl Cole. Some locals joining them were Don and Pat Lake, Al and Sharon Tyler and Art and Ann Robertson. The sun peeked out just as the ceremony began, making for a beautiful occasion. SPEAKING of local successes of our educational system, Kurt Lohmiller is now a rising rock star with the band Goldfinger. Known for his trumpet-playing talent, he's been in great demand. Now Kurt is a traveling troubadour--in a John Madden-style bus. A great experience! . . . . Former Mayor John Gatto and mom Marie are proud parents of their son, David, who is the new CEO of LA Gear. They are also very proud of their grandchildren, Lindsay and Nicholas, David and Lori's two children. Congratulations and great going--even if the gear is from L.A. . . . . Seen hanging out at Nob Hill was Bob McLoskey--and wearing a tie to boot! He not only checks out the vegetables, he checks out the women, too! . . . Geoff Patnoe (another Cupertino grad) was in town and got engaged to Christy Lemen. They first met as waiters at Good Earth, which is also where they celebrated their engagement. Geoff is a government affairs executive and a former aide to the governor. He also writes an occasional column right here in The Courier. We wish you the best. CERTAINLY you have loved ones you're very proud of. We'd love to have you share their stories with all of us. We all want to hear about people we have known from yesterday to many yesterdays ago. . . .The recent Ikebana show was a real eye-catcher! So many arrangements, each one more beautiful than the last, featuring our own Fusako Hoyrup . . . . Marny Salter has finally retired after years and years and years (nearly forever) with Mervie's (a.k.a Mervyn's). She' s ready to do lunch and socialize with the rest of you retirees. . . . Jim and Linda Walker spent 10 days touring Victoria, B.C., and visiting old Cupertino retirees Mary and Carmen Panucci (Mary is the former FUHSD superintendent) in Port Ludlow, Washington. Both had smiles from ear to ear, very contented in wonderland. They then toddled along to visit Mari Tank in Bend, Ore. Mari is busy getting the house just as she wants it while Barry is doing the commute thing to Silicon Valley. SO while we still hear criticism about the Cupertino Post Office, there are individuals who still believe service is the name of the game. Andrea Deale always has a smile and cheerful, helpful attitude for her customers. We thank you for a job well done. . . . Very deserving of the Citizen of the Year award are Its Uenaka and Dave Voss. This special Chamber event will be held Nov. 15 at Saratoga Country Club. It will be a sellout, so call for reservations at 252-1288 for your seat at the affair . . . . Cupertino Inner Wheel had its first meeting of the year. Yukking it up were Doris Hijmans, Barbara Grover, Ruth Donk (straight from jogging), Cheryl 'Chicken Dance' Brown and Michele Tripp . . . . Quota Club of Cupertino is selling drawing tickets for a Hog (Harley-Davidson motorcycle to you techies). You can purchase tickets from Harvey Barnett, Barbara Nunes, Libby Russo or any other member. For more information call Betty Nelson, 248-2429 . . . . Keep in touch. Phone 725-0930 or 252-1288, fax 446-5402 or 252-5780, email Cupscoop@aol.com or catch The Courier' s Web site.
