Youth basketball

The Northwest YMCA is holding sign-ups for the winter youth basketball league season. The league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through the eighth grade.

The league features instruction in basic fundamentals. There are no scores or standings kept, and every player is guaranteed to play one full half per game.

League play begins Jan. 17, and the registration deadline is Jan. 9. Games are played on Saturdays, and there is one weeknight practice per week.

The cost is $70 per player, and a $20 YMCA membership is required. For more information, call Matt Klock at 257-7160, ext. 19.

Nguyen second

Jennifer Nguyen of Monta Vista finished second overall in the girls' division at the Lynbrook Invitational cross country meet last week.

Nguyen covered the 2.1 mile distance in 13:33 to finish six seconds behind the race winner from Wilcox.

The Monta Vista boys were also second, finishing well behind Saratoga. Greg Kimura led the Matadors by finishing ninth in 11:46.

Lynbrook's Aman Sirohi finished high in the individual standings, running fourth in 11:39.

In dual meet competition last week, Rachel Fredrickson was third in the girls' race in 15:05, and Darius Siddiqui was fourth in the boys' race in 11:38, but Homestead lost in both races to Gunn on the 2.17 mile course at Gunn.

Homestead's Matt Hovik and David Morgan had run strong the weekend before in the St. Francis-Foothill Invitational. Hovik covered the 3.0 mile course in 16:37 to finish second in the junior race and Morgan finished in 17:39 to nail fourth in the senior race.

Dons comes up winners

The men's and women's soccer teams at De Anza Community College each came up winners in Coast Conference play last week.

Jodie Walters (Fremont) knocked in a goal and dished off an assist to lead the De Anza women to a 3-0 win over Cabrillo. Kara Grondzik and Michelle Kandah also scored goals in the win.

The Dons, 15-1-1 for the year and 13-1-1 in the conference, had opened the week with a 3-1 win over West Valley. Walters had a goal and two assists and Kandah chipped in with a goal and an assist. Grondzik also scored for the Dons.

The De Anza men's team, meanwhile, opened the week with a 3-1 win over Las Positas and backed that up with a 4-1 victory over the City College of San Francisco. The Dons are 15-1-1 in the conference.
