Vikes get Halloween treat

Tuttle scores 11 in Matador loss

It was a classic Halloween treat.

The Lynbrook girls' water polo team tricked Leland for a 5-2 win in the finals of the Halloween Classic at Willow Glen to treat themselves to a tournament championship last weekend.

Lynbrook edged Presentation 8-7 in overtime in the semi-finals, then whipped the Chargers in the title game to clinch the tourney crown.

Suzannah Johnson and Samara Silverman popped two goals apiece, and Nicole Morasky added one to lead the Vikings to the title-clinching win over the Chargers.

Johnson had poured in five goals to lead the Vikes to the 8-7 win over the Panthers in the semis. Morasky, Silverman and Rachel Vitale-Modrich also scored for the winners.

Lynbrook had opened the tourney with a tought 5-4 overtime win over Menlo-Atherton. Johnson and Silverman hit two goals each for the Vikings, and Morasky added one.

Monta Vista ended up fourth in the tournament, losing 9-3 to Presentation in the fight for third place. The Matadors had lost 12-1 to Leland in the semifinals.

The Mats had opened tourney play with a 10-4 win over Sacred Heart Prep.

Saratoga and Cupertino each lost in the semifinal round in the tournament's Lincoln Division.

The Falcons opened with a tight 2-0 win over Lincoln on goals by Cari Cowdrey and Kate O'Donnell, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to Valley Christian in overtime in the semifinals.

Saratoga fought back with a 10-1 win over Cupertino to secure third place in the division.

The Pioneers had opened play with a 6-4 win over Mt. Pleasant, but they lost 9-3 to Pioneer in the semifinals.

In the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week, Lynbrook breezed to a 14-6 win over Palo Alto to jump to 4-0 in league play.

Silverman led the Vikings with four goals, and Johnson chipped in with three. Joanna Chung, Morasky and Diana Nguyen finished with two goals each for the winners, and Vitale-Modrich added one.

Monta Vista lost 11-5 to Los Gatos to slip to 0-4 in the division.

In boys' action, Saratoga outlasted Monta Vista 19-17 in a high-scoring De Anza Division affair.

David Breitenbach and David Kim punched in four goals apiece and Jon Cox, and Gerald Askew canned three each to lead Saratoga to the thrilling victory.

D.J. Tuttle had the hot hand for the Matadors in the loss, pouring in 11 goals for Monta Vista. Justin Lee added four goals for the Mats.

Lee had pitched in four goals and Tuttle tossed in three to lead Monta Vista to a tight 8-6 win over Lynbrook the week before.

Brandon Montaner added a goal for the Matadors, who pulled out their first win of the league season. The Mats are now 1-4.

Frank Liao and David Shin scored two goals apiece for the Vikings and Clifton Awuy, and Jason Chavez added one each.

Lynbrook slipped to 0-5 in the division after an 11-8 loss to unbeaten Palo Alto last week. Awuy bombed three goals, and Chavez hit two for the Vikes.

The Vikes lost four games last weekend against some tough competition at the John Felix Tournament.

Ross Morrill knocked down five goals, but the Vikings lost 10-8 to Bellarmine. Ylan Iocobovici scored twice for Lynbrook, and Chavez added a goal.

Two goals by Morrill and one each by Chavez and Iocobovici weren't enough for the Vikings in a 14-4 loss to El Torro.

Lynbrook opened with a 16-4 loss to Wilcox. Awuy scored two goals for the Vikings and Morrill and Scott Anderson had one each.

Morrill hit three goals, Awuy two and Anderson one, but the Vikes lost 12-6 to Live Oak.

In another De Anza Division game last week, Cupertino lost 14-10 to Gunn. Brandon Robinson and Adrian Malamitsas pumped in three goals apiece for the Pioneers, and Ben Donaldson had two. Chris Dunlap and Steven Puccinelli also scored for 'Tino.

In El Camino Division action, Dave Daines buried nine goals and Hrsto Avgarski drilled four to lead Homestead to a 19-10 win over Wilcox last week.

Daniel Bodeman supported with three goals in the win, and Greg Studzinski added two for the Mustangs.

Homestead, 3-1 in the division and 5-7 for the year, had opened the week with a 15-9 win over Mountain View.

Studzinski poured in six goals and Daines popped five to lead Homestead to the win. Bodeman and Avgarski tossed in two goals apiece for the Mustangs.
