Realini joins Cougars, after this season
By DICK SPARRER
They say diamonds are a girl's best friend.
But Ryan and Dustin Realini of Cupertino would have to argue that point a bit. Because the way they look at it, diamonds are a guy's best friend ... baseball diamonds, that is.
The brothers have been standouts on local diamonds for most of the last decade, first on the Little League fields of Cupertino and then starring on the high school diamonds of the area.
Ryan Realini played at Monta Vista and has gone on to become an all-conference baseball player at West Valley Community College. Ryan hit .369 as a designated hitter for the Vikings last spring to earn a place on the All-Coast Conference second team.
Dustin Realini, though, hasn't been one to follow hit brother's path around the diamond. While Ryan went off to playing at Monta Vista, Dustin chose to attend Valley Christian High School. And it appears that Dustin has a different direction in mind when it comes time to play college ball.
The younger Realini has accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Washington State.
He won't be playing for the Cougars right away, though--Dustin still has a year left to play at Valley Christian. Realini will return for his fourth varsity season this spring, gunning for a third straight spot on the all-Central Coast Section squad as a senior. He has already helped the Warriors win back-to-back CCS titles.
Dustin played third base for Team California this past summer, and the club finished second in the Junior Sunbelt Tournament in Oklahoma. Later, he hit .425 and powered two home runs to help Team California to a third-place finish at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series in Cleveland, Ohio. He plans to play for the club again this winter in the National Wood Bat championships in Florida.
Along with playing for Team California, Realini took part in the Team One Nationals in Tempe, Ariz., the Perfect Game Nationals in Tampa, Fla., and the Area Code games last summer.
