Redesigned Homestead library opens

By Jennifer Zhang

A dedication ceremony was held in Homestead High School to celebrate the opening of the new library on campus. Construction began in March and was completed in May.

"I think it provides a better and more pleasant environment for students," said Carolyn Hatling, library specialist at Homestead. "The changes are very positive. The kids love it."

This new, enlarged library is composed of a main reading room with an online research area, a soft seating area, a reference area, a career center or computer lab, three student project workrooms and additional workrooms.

The facility has a book capacity of 26,000 volumes and contains more than 100 computer workstations. According to Hatling, there are about 24 new computers and 14 old ones.

"It's almost three times as big as the old library," she added. "The old library was dirty and crowded. It was like working in a dark cave."

According to William Savidge, director of facilities modernization for Fremont Union High School District, the total cost of this project is around $2.5 million.

Homestead Assistant Principal Carol Shimizu believes this new library benefits faculty as well as students.

"It's a great facility for everyone," she said. "Many general school activities, such as faculty meetings, can take place in there."

The new library will soon extend hours to provide service after school.

"The goal is to provide students updated information in a timely manner," Shimizu said.

The library is located at 21370 Homestead Road. Its hours are Monday to Friday from 7:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
