It sounded like a good idea at the time.
The Almaden Valley Rotary club approached Jim Guido of the San Jose Police Activities League with an idea for a summer all-star football game for recently graduated high school seniors.
The two organizations got together to make it happen, and on Aug. 8, 1974, the finest high school football players from the '74 graduating class got together for the first game of its kind, played that summer at San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium.
Well, it was a good idea then, and it's still a good idea today. The 30th annual Silicon Valley Youth Classic Charlie Wedemeyer High School All-Star Football Game will return to the popular San José City College field on July 21, 7:30 p.m.
Local stars set to play in this year's edition of the all-star classic include running back Jonathan Price and linebacker Nykk Ramirez-Baker of Cupertino, offensive lineman Mike Van Orden of Homestead and wide receiver Gavin Zack of Monta Vista.
