Shelby was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Denver, Colo., and worked as a psychiatrist at the Palo Alto Clinic for 21 years. After his retirement in 1986, he was a docent at the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve in Woodside.

Survivors include four children—Susan Rushton of Auburn, Bob Shelby of San Jose, Julie Shelby of Mountain Ranch and Jim Shelby of Menlo Park. Shelby had three grandchildren—Molly, Bobby and Claire, all of San Jose.
