In a simple word, Monta Vista's girls soccer team was dominant--on both ends of the field--during the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division season.
The Matadors outscored league opponents 60-6 in 12 games.
So, when the league coaches finally got together to determine post-season honors, it was no surprise that Monta Vista players dominated the awards.
Matador junior Deanna DesCamp earned the Defensive Most Valuable Player award. Sophomore teammate Jenny Kute was rewarded for her 15-goal, 10-assist league season with the Offensive MVP award.
Katie Sang was selected Most Valuable Senior. Senior Sara DeWath and sophomore Emily Rubin, who combined for 16 goals and 14 assists in division play, were all-league first team selections. Three of Monta Vista's top defensive players, sophomores Alex Gatley and Jennifer Nguyen and freshman Rosa Ahn, also were tabbed to the first team.
Other local girls picked to the El Camino first team were Melissa Ivan and Jessica Ristall of Lynbrook and Page Dickson of Cupertino. Cupertino's Brittany Palacio was the Most Valuable Goalie.
Homestead goalkeeper Megan Foertsch was tabbed Most Valuable Goalie by De Anza Division coaches. Homestead's Michelle Grabau, Katie Kimure and Shiela Saneinejad won all-league spots. Several post-season laurels also were bestowed on the boys teams of Cupertino and Homestead, the El Camino champion and runner-up.
Cupertino senior forward Yuki Minematsu was named the division's Most Valuable Player, while high-scoring Homestead senior Craig Moberg was named Offensive MVP. Matt Provencher of Cupertino was tabbed Goalie of the Year.
All-El Camino first team selections included seniors Kevin Jin and Tai Mitchell and juniors Dan O'Donnell and Kenny Kim of Cupertino and seniors Jason Anthony and Justin Hall, freshman Alex Plancarte and Oscar Valenzuela of Homestead.
Brothers Natsuki and Mizuki Hamada of Monta Vista and Lynbrook seniors Tim Nicholas and Greg Adams won De Anza all-league honors.
