Five area athletes will join the ranks of the immortals.
No, they won't actually live forever, but their legacies will live on in the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame. The hall will induct five new members who have set themselves apart from the rest of the athletes in their particular sports--tennis, football and golf.
The new class, the first of the second decade of San Jose Sports Hall of Fame inductees, includes Brent Jones, who played football at Leland High School and Santa Clara University before ultimately becoming an All-Pro with the San Francisco 49ers; Ken Venturi, a golfer from San José State University who joined the PGA tour and won the U.S. Open in 1964; Benny Pierce, who coached the Saratoga High School football team and won 17 league championships in 33 seasons; and Barbara and Kathy Jordan, who each both singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon and won Australian, French and U.S. Opens.
Jones' entire career as a football player was spent in the Bay Area, including 11 years with the 49ers. He was a part of the 1989, '90 and '95 Super Bowl championship teams and was a Division 2 All-American in 1985 for Santa Clara University. Jones was drafted in the fifth round in 1986 by the Pittsburgh Steelers and was traded to the 49ers, where he can boast 417 receptions for 5,195 yards and 30 touchdowns. Jones was also a member of the Pro Bowl from 1993 to 1996 and now participates on the San Jose Sharks operating committee.
Venturi grew up in San Francisco, where he went to high school before attending San José State University and becoming an asset on their golf team in the early 1950s. Venturi won both college and amateur tournaments in his years with the Spartans. Venturi was also a member of the 1953 U.S. team that won the Walker Cup. He won the Bing Crosby Pro-Am in 1960 and won the U.S. Open in 1964, which was the same year he was picked as the PGA Player of the Year. Unfortunately, Venturi injured his hand and ended his golfing career a little early. He then moved to the television booth and worked there until 2002 when he retired as one of the best known analysts. He is in the Golf Hall of Fame, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the San José State Hall of Fame and soon the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.
Pierce's claim to fame rests in his coaching skills at Saratoga High. He retired with an overall record of 270 wins, 84 losses and four ties in his 33-year career as the Falcons' head coach. Pierce, a halfback at Los Gatos High School and San José State, was the California High School Coach of the Year in 1976. He led his teams to 17 league titles, a county championship in 1971 and Central Coast Section titles in 1973, '76, '80 and '87. He boasted a record of 97-15 in the 1970s with undefeated seasons in 1973 and '76. The Saratoga High School football field that opened in 2004 was named in his honor.
Barbara Jordan, who originally comes from Pennsylvania, received a scholarship for tennis to Stanford where she was a three-time All-American in 1976, '77 and '78. She and her sister Kathy were the collegiate doubles champions in 1978. Barbara went pro in 1979 and won the Australian Open. She won the French Open in mixed doubles in 1983. She was part of the Women's Tennis Association board of directors and received the WTA Player Service Award. She is now a lawyer for the Nature Conservancy in San Francisco and is a member of the International Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
Kathy Jordan, like her sister, attended Stanford and was a member of the '78 national championship team. She and her sister won the doubles tournament and she won the doubles title again in 1979 with Alycia Moulton. She also won the singles championship that year. Kathy was an All-American in both 1978 and 1979. She won both the U.S. Open and Australian Open doubles in 1981. She went on to win in mixed doubles in 1986 in the French Open as well as three titles in 1980, '85 and '86 at Wimbledon. She won the WTA's Player Service Award in '91 and is part of the Stanford Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
The five new members will be honored at a dinner ceremony at the H.P. Pavilion in November. The date of the induction is yet to be determined, but dinner tickets will begin at $150 apiece. To reserve a seat call 408.288.2936.
