Tough weekend for local football teams
By Mike Barnhart
It was a tough weekend for local high school football teams.

Upset bids by Homestead, Monta Vista and Lynbrook were quickly squashed by their opponents, but Cupertino nearly won its Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division contest against visiting Gunn on Saturday night.

The Pioneers scored 15 fourth-quarter points and led 15-14 with two minutes to play. However, the Titans rallied to score on a 20-yard run and claim a 20-15 decision.

Gunn entered the fourth quarter with a 7-0 lead, but Cupertino forged in front, 9-7, on a 32-yard field goal by Max Ingraham and an 87-yard run by Jimmy Trask.

Later in the period, Gunn went back ahead, 14-9. Then Travis Scibetta returned the ensuing kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown and a 15-14 lead.

The Pioneers, whose slate slipped to 1-4 in the El Camino Division and 2-6 overall, travel to Diesner Field in Sunnyvale on Nov. 4 for a non-league tussle with Homestead. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Mustangs are coming off a 49-6 defeat to Los Gatos last Friday. The Wildcats posted 28 first-quarter points against Homestead and rolled at Diesner Field. The Mustangs, now 1-4 in SCVAL De Anza Division play and 3-5 overall, prevented a shutout when Jay Atkins scored on a 2-yard touchdown run following an 88-yard pass reception from quarterback Gareth Pack.

Fremont, 4-4 overall after a tough 15-12 non-league setback at Saratoga, is still very much alive in the race for the El Camino championship at 3-1 with two games to play. The Firebirds must beat Lynbrook (0-5, 0-8) at Cupertino, 7:30 p.m., on Nov. 4 to stay in contention heading into the final week of the season.

Santa Clara and Los Altos both registered shutouts last week to remain tied atop the El Camino Division at 4-0. The Bruins blanked Monta Vista 44-0, and the Eagles dumped Lynbrook 30-0.

Fremont will look on with great interest when the co-leaders collide Saturday afternoon at Santa Clara. No matter what happens, Fremont needs to win its last two games and hope Los Altos loses to either Santa Clara or Gunn.

Monta Vista, 1-3 in the El Camino circuit and 3-5 overall, will visit Gunn (1-4, 2-6) at 2:45 p.m. on Nov. 4.
