Another clean sweep for Cupertino cricket players

By SAMANTHA ROBERTSON

Cupertino's California Cricket Academy scored an impressive showing at the first Junior National Cricket Tournament. The club boasted a perfect record, capturing the championship for all three age categories: under 11, under 13 and under 15.

The tournament spanned four days and 23 games. It was played in Cupertino, Santa Clara, San Jose and Stanford, drawing more than 800 spectators June 22-27. Games in Cupertino were played at the Cupertino Library field, 10800 Torre Ave.

Hemant Buch, organizer of the tournament, said he was pleasantly surprised how smoothly the event ran. "There were no disputes and no grievances, which was very unexpected," he said.

"As far as hospitality was concerned, spectators had enough food and cool drinks, and they kept cool in the 100-plus degree weather under the tents we set up." Buch said the parents played a huge role in the success of the flagship tournament. "At the opening ceremony, I dedicated the tournament to the parents, who had the responsibility of assembling and disassembling the field and taking score."

Buch said the smooth execution of the event allowed the players and spectators to focus on the cricket matches and it alleviated some of the competitive tensions between the teams.
