Monta Vista's Montin leads pack of local athletes to CCS

The cream floats to the top each spring when the finest track and field athletes compete in the Central Coast Section finals. And athletes from Monta Vista, Cupertino, Homestead and Lynbrook will be part of that rich field on May 25 when the CCS championship meet is held at Gilroy High School.
Helena Montin, Elise Leung, Jean Feng, Marissa Minderler, Natasha Sakellar and Bill Simon of Monta Vista will join Alissa Hayes and Sarah Engle of Homestead, Stephanie Glick of Cupertino and Sameer Thadani of Lynbrook after recording qualifying performances at the CCS semifinals held May 19 at San Jose City College.
Montin topped the list of Monta Vista qualifiers, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-4. Aptos junior Janelle Coulter also topped 5-4, but Montin was the winner on fewer attempts. Five girls finished at 5-2 with only misses separating third through seventh place. In that group was Homestead's Hayes, a freshman, who finished fourth overall.
Cupertino's Glick, a junior, was fourth in the triple jump at 36-6 with Leung, a junior, fifth at 36-4.25. Leung was also fourth in the long jump at 17-3.75.
Feng qualified in a pair of events for the Matadors, finishing fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:15.77 and 12th in the 1,600 (top 12 finishers qualified.
Homestead's Engle, a junior, was fourth in the pole vault at 11-6.
Minderler, a senior was fifth in the 100 in 12.47, and she helped the Mats to a fourth in the 4x100 relay in 48.2. Sakellar, a freshman, was sixth in the 400 in 57.33.
In boys competition, Simon, a senior, qualified for the CCS finals by finishing fourth in the 800 in 1:56.52.
Thadani sprinted to a third in the 200 in 22.19 to win place in the finals. He was also ninth in the 100 in 11.23.
