Volunteer appointed to FUHSD

By Erin Hussey

Following a five-hour interview session on July 30, the Fremont Union High School District board of trustees appointed Hung Wei to replace resigning member Kathryn Ho. Ho announced her resignation last month due to her mother's failing heath.

"I feel I can make a good contribution to the present board because I have a special place in my heart for teenagers," said Wei.

Wei, who has lived in Cupertino since 1990 with her family, is an active volunteer both in and outside the education sector. She was the PTA co-president at both Lincoln Elementary and Monta Vista high schools and also founded the Monta Vista job shadow program.

Currently, Wei is the president of the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation and Monta Vista PTA vice president.

"We were looking for someone who could round out our team and also be a bridge to the community," said trustee Bill Wilson.

Ten people interviewed for the position, including Maria McCrea Segal, Myoung Kang and Don Mackenzie--who were considered top candidates along with Wei. Each applicant was asked the same questions in front of a crowd of more than 50 parents, teachers, students and community members.

"There was a very strong field of candidates, any of whom would have done an excellent job," said Wilson.

Wilson credited Wei's volunteer work, her ability to get others to volunteer and her enthusiasm for connecting with the community as some of the characteristics that set her apart.

"I think that the board has really come together to work as a group, and I feel that Hung will fit right in and we will continue to move forward without missing a step," Wilson said.

Wei will be sworn into office during the Sept. 4 board meeting.
