6 candidates run for council

By Crystal Lu

Six candidates will run for two seats on the Cupertino City Council in November's election.

Kris Wang, mayor of Cupertino, is the only incumbent running for re-election. Councilman Richard Lowenthal will be termed out.

Besides Wang, the other candidates are Raj Abhyanker, Barry Chang, Albert Chu, Mark Santoro, and Gilbert Wong.

Mary Ellen Chell and Mahesh Nihalani circulated nomination papers but withdrew them during the nomination period, which began on July 16 and ended on Aug. 10.

The city council will discuss filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Vice Mayor Patrick Kwok at its Aug. 21 meeting. The council can fill the vacancy by appointment or call for a special election on Feb. 5, 2008.
