'God Squad' to open lecture series

    The Prowler

Does art imitate nature, or does nature imitate art? Not fond of chicken-and-egg type conundrums, the Prowler prefers instead to consider both art and nature as worthy of admiration.

Fans of the arts will appreciate that Marian Clayden of Monte Sereno is scheduled to speak Jan. 25 in the Saratoga Foothill Club 1999-2000 Public Lecture Series. The internationally known fashion designer and textile artist has work hanging in such enviable venues as the Smithsonian Institution and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The program begins at 10 a.m. in the Saratoga Foothill Club's clubhouse, 20399 Park Place, Saratoga. Non-members are welcome. A $6 donation is appreciated. Call 408.867.2361 or 408.354.2527 for more info.

Another creative gathering takes place Jan. 8 at 1 p.m., when the Los Gatos Art Association welcomes guest artist M.E. "Mike" Bailey of Santa Cruz for a watercolor demonstration. The Prowler hears Bailey is known for his "juicy" approach to his subjects with a loose, dramatically lit, emotional touch. The meeting is at the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos, 19 High School Court.

Finally, nature-lovers may be interested to know the nonprofit Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District seeks volunteers to work in its environmental education program, Space and Species: Exploring Natural Communities. As an outdoor education docent, volunteers will spend the day hiking, interpreting nature, and leading games and activities with schoolchildren. A hands-on training program will be held on Thursdays from Jan. 27 through March 30. Docents must be available on weekdays. For more info., call 650.691.1200.
