Los Gatos Weekly-TimesRotary Club offers scholarshipsThe Los Gatos Rotary Club encourages local professionals who would like to benefit from vocational or professional training abroad to apply for a new Rotary Foundation Vocational Study Scholarship. Applications are now available for the 2000-01 academic year and can be obtained from the Rotary Club of Los Gatos. Interested professionals should meet the following criteria: * Have at least two years work experiences in their proposed fields of training; * Have completed their secondary school education; * Be proficient in the native language (if applicable) of their intended host country; * Have a firm sense of their career path and how it will be helped by vocational study in another country. Training programs in other countries for qualified individuals include internships, apprenticeships, on-the-job training or study in technical or trade schools. Vocational study programs are self-designed--applicants must include a proposal of where and what they hope to study. The Rotary Foundation Vocational Study Scholarship is a pilot program with competitive scholarships--those applicants endorsed by the Los Gatos Rotary Club will go on to compete at the district level. Each Rotary district then selects one candidate who will compete internationally for approximately 10 to 15 scholarships, each valued at between $10,000 and $15,000. Special consideration will be given to applicants who plan to pursue programs relating to the following Rotary International areas of emphasis: alleviation of hunger and malnutrition; functional literacy; the environment; drug abuse prevention; care for the elderly; urban peace; polio eradication and post-polio syndrome; AIDS education and concern for families.
