School board commends 'Reality check' staff
At a school board meeting Jan. 4, past and present staff members of Los Gatos High School's publication, Reality Check, were honored by the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District board members for their achievements.
In a small ceremony, school board President Jackie Schmidt-Posner handed each staff member and adviser Nancy Offer a certificate of achievement. Principal Trudy McCulloch showed board members the golden bell award given to Reality Check by the California School Board Association on Dec. 11 at a ceremony in San Francisco; the publication received the award for the support it offers LGHS students. McCulloch attended the San Francisco ceremony with Superintendent Cynthia Ranii.
Geography Bee kicks off at Fisher Middle School
The first round of the year 2000 schoolwide National Geography Bee at Fisher Middle School begins Jan. 12. The Geography Bee is for students in fourth through eighth grades in schools across the United States.
The winners of the Bee take a written exam and, if they score high enough, they continue to Sacramento to compete with other winners from throughout California. From there, students can advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C.
LGHS students bound for Italy
About eight students, teachers and parents associated with Los Gatos High School's Italian class showed up at the district board meeting Dec. 7 with research and student/teacher polls ready to defend their cause. The board was deciding whether to allow three or five days of missed school for the Italian class trip to Bologna, Italy, during spring break.
The board was split on the decision, but eventually granted the students five days of leave, providing board members look into the possibility of creating a formal policy on the number of school days students can miss for educational trips.
