The Prowler
This week, the Prowler's peregrinations focus on people and places.
First up is an event that benefits a great cause. The annual Rinconada Hills Charity Supper takes place on Jan. 15 at the aforementioned country club's digs at 100 Avenida Del Sol. The evening, which begins at 7 p.m., includes champagne, dinner, live jazz by the Gary Chula Band, dancing, door prizes and a silent auction. A pretty good spread for a $30 price tag! What's even better is that proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which fulfills the dreams of children facing serious illnesses. Call 408.374.3895 to get in on the fun.
Combining fun and learning, Congregation Shir Hadash, 16555 Shannon Road, invites the community to its 8 p.m. service on Jan. 21, during which scholar-in-residence Rabbi Sandy Seltzer will talk about "Jews and Non-Jews Falling in Love." At 10:30 a.m. the next day, Seltzer discusses trends in Reform (liberal) Judaism. Seltzer's final program, "Spiritualizing Our Daily Lives," begins at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. All events are free. A catered lunch is available Saturday with advance payment. Everyone is welcome. Call 408.358.1751 for info.
Although it's not in Los Gatos, the nonprofit Greenbelt Alliance's Jan. 30 EcoHistory Outing to Almaden Quicksilver Park is the closest to Cat Town this new yearlong outing series will get for a while. Beginning at 10 a.m., volunteers will lead hikers through grasslands and woodlands to explore what was once California's richest quicksilver (mercury) mining area. There's also a tour of the mining museum and the historic New Almaden Village. To reserve a spot, dig out the hiking boots and call the Alliance: 415.255.3233.
