Holbert's 12 points not enough for Los Gatos

The home court advantage just wasn't enough for the Los Gatos boys basketball team last Thursday night.

In their only game of the week, the Wildcats dropped a 48-46 heartbreaker to powerful Fremont in action in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The loss left the Cats 2-1 in league and 8-9 for the year, and it came in the first of a string of four games against the toughest teams in the division.

Gatos lost to Fremont, now must face Milpitas, Palo Alto and Wilcox in consecutive games--and all three games are on the road. The trio of clubs figure as the teams Cats head coach Jim Marino picked as the league title favorites this winter.

The Cats will travel for two rugged games this week, visiting Milpitas on Jan. 16, 7 p.m., and heading to Palo Alto on Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats will visit Wilcox on Jan. 22 before returning home to host Lynbrook in the first game of the season's second round on Jan. 24.

Los Gatos and Fremont locked up in a tough fight last Thursday, but the Firebirds outscored the Cats in the final period to pull out a thrilling 48-46 victory.

Scott Holbert was the only Gatos player to score in double figures. The 6-foot-4 senior forward punched in 12 points on six buckets from the field.

Chris Clock had a three-pointer among his nine points, and Trent Edwards hit a three on his way to six points. Nik Kay and Rory Bauer had five points apiece for the Wildcats, Jamal Modir hit four, Ben Sandigo three and Jayson Furia two.

The Los Gatos girls, meanwhile, faced a midweek bye and were to host Fremont on Friday night. The Wildcats will head to Homestead on Jan. 15 and host Palo Alto on Jan. 17 in a pair of 7 p.m. games in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
