Three shops affected by small blaze

    By Gloria I. Wang

A one-alarm fire ignited in downtown Los Gatos Dec. 27, affecting three businesses on N. Santa Cruz Avenue.

At about 1 a.m., a small blaze started at Labels of Los Gatos, causing the two large display windows in front to blow out. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. According to fire personnel, Labels suffered a loss of about $70,000 in clothing.

Stores on either side of Labels also suffered some damage. Rebecca Sell, owner of Hers Studio, says she does not know the monetary value of the damage caused, but the store will be closed for the next few weeks. There was smoke damage to the building, and clothing and displays were destroyed.

Elite Wireless had soot and ash on the floor and $10,000 worth of damage to the building. Firefighters also broke a window in order to get into and save the building. General Manager Clark Saxberg says, however, that the store will remain open.

"I want to praise the fire department as much as I can," Saxberg said. "The fire was inches away from destroying our building also."
