At the Jan. 10 meeting of the Los Gatos Union School District Board of Trustees, Los Gatos Elementary Educational Foundation President Steve Wernecke announced that the foundation has authorized an additional $96,000 for use by the district.
Wernecke said the bonus was a favorable result of the foundation's annual mail-in and Phone-A-Thon fundraising campaigns in the fall of 1995.
"We could see that the contribution rate was higher than we'd been expecting. It's very encouraging. I interpret it as a strong vote of confidence in our schools. I don't think it's an accident," Wernecke said later.
Ten thousand dollars will go toward Fisher Middle School's TNT program to extend its before- and after-school hours of supervised, voluntary study and tutoring. Wernecke said that of the fundraiser remittance slips that included handwritten comments, many indicated interest in supporting TNT.
The remainder of the windfall will consist of grants of an additional $10 per elementary school student in the district. The monies will be used to fund programs and projects related to visual or performing arts or to enrich schools' collections of educational CD-ROM computer programs.
In the 13 years since its inception, the foundation has raised more than $845,000 to augment funding for local schools.
